Time Management Tips
Look at the quarter as a whole.
- In your planner [available in the print version of the 1998-1999 Student Handbook],
write down deadlines for all term papers, dates of quizzes, projects and tests.
- Learning to meet deadlines will be your highest priority for the quarter.
- Work backward from the due date.
- Estimate the time required to prepare and complete each high priority task.
- Break each assignment into smaller manageable tasks you can do while waiting in line,
when you have a spare five minutes here and there.
Look at the week as a whole.
- Schedule all fixed times in your schedule: classes, labs, workshops, study groups, tutor
times and appointments.
- Schedule high priority activities during your prime time.
- Determine when your prime time is. Schedule studying for your most difficult courses
then.
- Set aside 1, 2 or 3-hour blocks of time for studying; pick a consistent time and place.
- Make better use of smaller blocks of time for reviewing class notes, reading 5 pages,
etc.
- Schedule rest and recreation! Make time for yourself to renew your energy, even if
its for 15 minutes of listening to your favorite music as you ride the bus.
Look at the day as a whole.
- Each day prioritize the things you need to do and number them 1, 2, 3, etc.
- Do the most important first and work down your list.
- Check off completed tasks to reward yourself. Practice doing this every day for three
weeks; 21 days makes a habit!
