- Sample questions for the COMPASS and ASSET are available at
www.act.org/compass/sample/.
- You can sign up for a free trial and complete sample questions within the ALEKS at
www.aleks.com.
- The SCC Library has test preparation books which you can check out of the library and books you can use to review reading,
writing, and math skills. You can also visit the SCC campus to use the Learning Express Library
database which contains test practice tools (for ASSET and other tests) and skills improvement tools in English and in
Spanish. Contact the library at Reference@scc.spokane.edu or
509-533-8821.
- Get plenty of rest and eat properly before the test.
- Arrive early to locate the testing area and restrooms
- Be sure you understand the directions for each test before answering questions
- Read each question carefully. If answering an item requires several steps, consider them all.
- Be sure to answer every item as there is no penalty for guessing
- If you have a problem or question during the test, ask the test administrator for help
Note: We will provide you with pencils, scratch paper and a calculator for the placement test. Please do
not bring these items with you.
The Assessment Center stops testing two weeks prior to the beginning of each
quarter and resumes testing the second week of the quarter.

Assessment testing assists students in choosing classes that are neither too difficult nor too easy, so they may experience
success during their first quarter at SCC. The COMPASS and ALEKS placement tests are computer-based and are not timed. The
ASSET writing test is a timed test completed with paper and pencil. COMPASS, ALEKS, and ASSET tests are not intelligence or
aptitude tests; they are placement tests.
Some programs, including Civil Engineering Technician, Mechanical Engineering Technician, and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)
require Mechanical Reasoning and Spatial Relations (MR/SR) tests in addition to COMPASS. Other programs may require keyboarding
tests in addition to the COMPASS. To schedule a keyboarding test or an MR/SR test, call the Assessment Center at
(509) 533-7074. The campus toll-free number is 1-800-248-5644.
After testing, students must complete New Student Orientation where they will meet with Counselors and Curriculum Advisors
to discuss test results, program requirements, course selection, registration procedures, college services and activities, and
strategies for success during their first quarter at SCC.
For further information, please contact the Testing Center by calling (509) 533-7074 or sending an email
