Surgical Technology Overview
Program description
The Surgical Technology program prepares students to function in cooperation with the surgeon and nurses in the operating
room performing duties that are vital for the safety and care of surgical patients. Students must have knowledge and skills
in surgical aseptic techniques for preparation and use of materials during a surgical procedure. Students also must be able
to relate to patients and other people in the field. Using reasonable judgment when working in emergency surgical situations
is required.
At the completion of the program, students will be able to accept responsibility expected of the surgical technologist as
a beginning staff employee in the operating room. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to write the
National Certifying Examination for Surgical Technologists for qualification as a certified surgical technologist (CST).
The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs
(www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the National Board of
Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (www.nbstsa.org).

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:
- Apply knowledge and skills of biological sciences in preparing and implementing
operating room procedures
- Identify and apply the concepts of medical ethics in relationship to the patient,
physician and health facility
- Recognize and apply the knowledge of legal implications of their actions as it relates
to themselves, the physician and the medical facility
- Identify and utilize surgical instruments, equipment, sutures, dressings, and
medications in the operating room according to minimal established competencies
- Comprehend surgical terminology utilized within the operating room environment
- Apply the concepts of social sciences in relating to patients, and other members of the
health team
- Identify the professional interrelatedness and interdependency of all segments of the
health care delivery system

Persons with Disabilities

of 1973, accommodations for students with disabilities will be considered at the student's request. The student will be required
to register with the Disability Support Services office and provide documentation of disability. Once the student is qualified by
the DSS Manager as having a disability, requested accommodations will be considered. Accommodations for the classroom, laboratory,
or clinical setting will be considered according to reasonableness. Accommodations that compromise patient care, or that
fundamentally alter the nature of the program or activity, are not considered to be reasonable. A student denied accommodation may
request an individualized determination to assure that the denial is not a result of disability discrimination by contacting the
Manager of Disability Support Services and Testing at 533-7498. Procedures for appeal are outlined in the SCC Center for

Students who have not currently been accepted to the waiting
list will be required to fulfill the prerequisites listed on the 2008-2009 Career Planning Guide prior to application to
the waiting list. Students who have already applied and been accepted to the waiting list are
strongly encouraged to
take the prerequisites listed on the 2008-2009 Career Planning Guide prior to starting the program.
New Admission Prerequisites/Requirements as of May 2007:
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- MATH 92 or 96
- BIOL 101
- CIS 110
- Appropriate scores in one of the following: ASSET or Compass
