Student Activities

The Office of Admissions welcomes prospective students interested in attending Spokane Community College. Those who have never applied to SCC who also wish to meet with a staff member to review and/or submit their admission applications may do so during the established hours of operation. Prospective students can also apply for admission by mail or by accessing the application online at www.scc.spokane.edu/?oladmiss. Student kiosks are available throughout campus and can also be used to submit online applications.

Assessment and entry placement testing is required for all new and reactivating college students who have not been assessed by SCC or SFCC within the last three years, or for those students who have not completed English 101 and Math 99. Testing is required to ensure you have been placed into classes that best meet your needs or to meet a minimum requirement of a particular program.

Athletic facilities include a full-size pool, indoor and outdoor running tracks, fast fitness center, weight room, tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, complete track and field facilities and intramural sports. The Wellness program at SCC assists students who wish to improve themselves physically by providing fitness testing, body composition, and blood pressure measurements. Athletic facilities hours vary each quarter based upon PE class schedules.

Two automated teller machines - one STCU and one Bank of America - are available during Lair hours.

The automotive department repair service is available to students, faculty, and staff only. Repairs generally cost nothing except the price of parts. If there is disposal of liquids, they charge 15% of the cost of the new fluids added. (So, if they get an oil change for $15.00 they would pay $2.25 for disposal.) To request a service repair, you must visit the automotive department secretary in Building 18. There you will fill out a waiver and personal information form. This is given to the appropriate instructor, and if the instructor has space for a new project he or she will call the applicant with an appointment. The primary purpose of any project will be for student learning. The car should be 10 years old or newer and must meet the instructor's curriculum.

A full-service bakery is available to students. Limited items are available for purchase. Stop by in person to place special orders. The bakery is located in Building 1, Room 130.

The gym is available for student use during non-class times. During basketball season, the gym is closed for team practices each afternoon.

The state-licensed, nationally-accredited, campus-based center provides quality full-day child care to infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Priority is given to children of income eligible SCC students. Fees apply. Evening and summer hours vary and include care for school-age children. Call the center to learn more.

Bigfoot Student Ambassadors are student leaders who represent the diverse and distinctive population of Spokane Community College. They work closely with faculty and staff to welcome campus visitors, provide them with accurate information and establish relationships that support our campus visitation programs through tours and special events. They also participate in high school visits.

In cooperation with the Inland Northwest Blood Center, SCC sponsors a quarterly blood drive for one day. For details about upcoming blood drives please contact the Student Activities staff in the Lair Addition.

The bookstore offers film developing, stamps, tools, greeting cards, clothing, electronics, and computer software at discounted rates. The bookstore hosts a used book buyback sale during the last days of each quarter.

Bus service is available daily throughout the year. Monthly student/VIP bus passes are available to SCC current students only at the Cashiers' Office located in Building 50, the Max Snyder Building. Bus schedules are available by calling 328-RIDE or by visiting the Spokane Transit website at www.spokanetransit.com. Bus stops are located on the north side of the clock tower. Sodexho offers catering services as well as special diets for alternative food choices and preparations for your individual needs upon request.

As a part of Admissions and Enrollment, campus tours are provided by the Campus Visitors Office Monday-Friday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. by appointment. The tours (particularly for large groups) should be scheduled two weeks in advance. No tours are available during finals or quarter breaks. Tuition and parking fees are paid to the Cashiers' Office. You may also purchase bus passes and medical and liability insurance. Distribution of financial aid, loan, and work study checks is handled through the Cashiers' Office, and you may cash personal checks up to $30 (two-party checks are not accepted). A valid photo ID is required.

In accordance with relevant state and federal laws that address equal access and reasonable accommodations, the center provides services to students with documented disabilities. Disability accommodations are considered on a case by case basis. Examples of accommodations include alternative testing, notetaking assistance, interpreter services, specialized learning software and hardware and other services are available for students. Computer labs are available for student use throughout the campus. The following lab hours may vary by quarter; please see posted hours at the individual labs.

The Continuing Education office provides programs that focus on personal enrichment and professional or career development in response to community needs. Coin-operated copy machines at a cost of 10 cents per page are available for student use in the Library and Media Services. Color copies and overhead transparencies can be made for a minimal charge with help from personnel in Graphics.

The SCC Distance Learning office provides support services to students enrolled in a variety of distance learning courses including SCC Internet/Online, Washington Online (WAOL), Interactive Television (ITV), and telecourses.

Closure of classes or offices due to weather or other emergencies will be relayed to major local radio and television stations for broadcast. Information is also available at the Community Colleges of Spokane's website (www.ccs.spokane.edu) and the Operations Hotline at 509-533-3303.

Environmental Sciences has a floral shop and greenhouse. The floral shop has flower arrangements for purchase. The greenhouse has indoor and outdoor plant sales periodically throughout the year.

A fax machine located in the library is available to students at a cost of 50 cents per page for local service and $1.00 for long distance service.

Financial Aid helps students who need additional funding to attend college. Each academic year students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Eligibility for most financial aid is based on the "need" of the student. The Federal Government will determine eligibility for, and amount of, financial aid. Awards come in three different forms: scholarships or grant aid, educational loans and work study. Financial Aid awards are usually made up of all three forms when an applicant applies on time.

The Food Bank is available to SCC students who need emergency assistance. Supplied through ASC funds as well as by donation, the food bank stocks non-perishable items. SCC students may access the food bank three times per quarter and should contact the ASC Director of Emergency Services at (509) 533-8913 with questions or concerns.

The game room features billiard tables, ping pong tables, darts, video games, TV room, and a jukebox. It is open regular school days from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Grades are generally available four business days after the end of each quarter at: https://secure.scc.spokane.edu/wts/info/

Students must complete a Petition for Degree or Certificate form to have their credits evaluated for the requirements of their degree and/or certificate. The forms are available at the division offices, the counseling center (Building 15), the information desk (Building 50) or can be downloaded from the CCS website. A separate Petition for Degree or Certificate form is required for each degree or certificate. A petition should be completed two quarters prior to the anticipated completion date in order to ensure all requirements are met and all degrees/ certificates earned are recorded on the student's transcript. Submit the completed form to the Transcript Office (Building 50). Completing the Petition for Degree or Certificate form entitles students to participate in the graduation ceremony. Graduation ceremonies are held once each school year at the end of spring quarter. Students completing their degree requirements at other times during the year are encouraged to return to participate in the June ceremonies.

The Graphics Services office provides a variety of services for students including color copying and printing, lamination, and CD/DVD burning for student projects. For more information on the variety of services offered, check out their website at www.scc.spokane.edu/?media.

The Greenery is a student-operated flower shop and nursery with three greenhouses where students grow and propagate house plants, annuals, perennials, trees, and bushes. Plants and fresh flower arrangements made by the floral students are available for purchase. Special arrangements can be made by calling The Greenery.

To park in any on-campus parking, including handicap parking, students must purchase a student parking permit. To park in state-designated handicap spaces, a state disability placard is also required. Quarterly disabled parking permits are available to individuals with temporary mobility issues.

The Student Health Center is open to all currently enrolled SCC and SFCC students. The health center is a walk-in clinic for basic sick-call and minor injury, and can write prescriptions and provide TB testing. Most clinic services are included in the student fees you have already paid.

Health Science offers some health services according to class programs, i.e., dietetic services offers nutritional analysis during spring quarter. Dental care offers free dental hygiene information and other dental services throughout the year. Echocardiography offers EKG testing during winter quarter. Check with the office on specific services and timelines. A Health Sciences Resource Center is also available.

SCC offers hearing-impaired students access to comprehensive support services while attending regular programs. Service needs are determined on a case by case basis. Contact the Center for Students with Disabilities for more information about these services.

SCC has no on-campus housing available. The Student Activities Office has a housing list available or you may access the housing list at: www.scc.spokane.edu/?stacthousing. Student ID cards are available in the library at the circulation desk. You will need picture ID and a copy of your class registration. Your first ID card is free; there is a $2.00 replacement. SCC ID cards may be used to check out library materials, use athletic facilities, attend athletic events, vote in ASC elections and pick up financial aid checks, and purchase books at the bookstore.

Low cost accident and health insurance is available to students on a quarterly basis. Information is located at the Cashiers' Office.

• This insurance plan must be purchased within the first twenty (20) days of each quarter.
• All registered Students must be enrolled in 6 or more credits.
• Spring quarter students that purchased insurance may purchase coverage for summer quarter without attending classes.
• Students must actively attend classes for at least the first 31 days beginning with the first day for which coverage is purchased.

The following intercollegiate sports are offered at:

SCC: Men's Basketball, Men's & Women's Cross Country, Men's & Women's Golf, Women's Soccer, Men's & Women's Tennis, Men's & Women's Track & Field

SFCC: Baseball, Women's Basketball, Men's Soccer, Women's Softball and Women's Volleyball. Students may attend either school while participating in sports, even if the sport is only offered at one school. [Note: Intercollegiate Sports are a district activity]

International Programs offers a full range of student services for currently enrolled international students:

SCC athletics offers intramural programs open to all SCC students. Basketball, volleyball and soccer leagues are formed at the beginning of each quarter. Open gym times and fun runs are also offered.

The LRC (Building 16) includes the Library and Media Services.

The library provides reference assistance and educational materials to students and a supportive environment for study and reflection. Lockers located in the main lobby of the Lair and Building 1 may be rented through the Cashiers' Office. Lockers in other buildings are checked out through the building or department office.

All items found are to be turned in to this office. Lost items can be identified and claimed here.

The only mailbox on campus is located outside the west entrance of the Student Services Center (Building 15).

The Instructional Media Center houses a 30 station drop-in computer lab, the non-print collection of library materials (videotapes, films, DVDs, etc) and checkout equipment such as video cameras, digital still cameras, laptop computers and projectors for faculty and student projects. The Center offers a variety of testing services including computer-based certification testing as well as testing for many online and telecourse classes. The Center also provides study carrels and study rooms for individual as well as group use. A TV studio and multi-station video editing facility is available for student projects.

The Multicultural Student Services Center will provide an inclusive atmosphere for all students, faculty, staff, and community members' visiting Spokane Community College. We will offer multicultural resources, advocacy, activities, programming, and clubs to ensure the success of our students. We will also provide assistance to students from traditionally under-represented backgrounds and help them achieve academic success at Spokane Community College. The Spokesman-Review is available for purchase outside the south entrance of the Lair. The New York Times is available for purchase at the Bookstore in the Lair. The Sasquatch Times (student newspaper) is available for free.

Orlando's is a luncheon restaurant facility staffed by students from the culinary arts program and features fine and exotic cuisine. Reservations are recommended. Orlando's is open to students and staff. Located at SCC, Building 1, Room 148. For reservations or information contact 533-7283.

Parking passes are purchased at the Cashiers' Office on a quarterly basis. Parking passes are to be displayed from the rearview mirror and are valid only in designated student parking areas. Passes must be renewed each quarter. Tickets must be paid before the end of the quarter for release of grades, to pick up financial aid checks, or to register.

Citations may be appealed in one of two ways:

1. In person at the Security Office in Building 1; Room 149 (you must bring your citation with you) - OR -
2. Online at the following website (you must have your citation information for this option) www.scc.spokane.edu/?sec

Citations may only be appealed within 14 days of their issuance.

Each campus building has at least one large recycling bin centrally located designed for a variety of recyclable items (building one has multiple locations for recycling bins). Recycling is good for the environment and also saves money for the campus by decreasing waste disposal costs.

Students may register for classes at the Registration Window. Other transactions at the Registration Window include add/drop, official withdrawal and late enrollment. Student kiosks are available throughout the campus for students to plan and register for classes, obtain copies of class schedules or print unofficial transcripts. Resident or nonresident classifications are used for tuition calculation purposes. If you are classified as a nonresident and are not an international student, have lived continuously in the state of Washington for the past twelve months, for purposes other than educational, and would like to your residency status reviewed, contact the Residency Classification Office for an appointment.

All students should familiarize themselves with the CCS Selected Rules, Regulations and Policies Concerning Student Conduct, Student Records, Traffic, Health and Safety Regulations and Rights of Appeal. Indoor Running Track - Available any time the building is open.

SCC Security is responsible for campus security. Services include vehicle assistance (jump starts/lock outs), escort services and parking enforcement. Citations may only be appealed within 14 days of their issuance.

Service learning is a method of teaching and learning that engages students in meaningful service to their communities through careful integration of academic instruction. Service learning gives students an opportunity to use knowledge gained in classes to address the needs of their neighborhoods and community. The service learning office is available to assist faculty in creating service learning opportunities and creating syllabi with a service learning component. We also offer the popular Students In Service (SIS) educational scholarship program - The Students in Service program is a part-time AmeriCorps program that encourages and supports college and university students to provide valuable service in their communities. SIS members make a difference in their communities, gain valuable civic and workforce skills. Upon completion of his or her term of service, each SIS member earns an education award up to $2,362.50.

Smoking is not allowed inside any college building or motor pool vehicle. In addition, smoking materials, i.e., cigarettes and related supplies, will not be sold on campus. State Law prohibits smoking within 25 feet of any door, window or vent. A $10 fine will be imposed if you are observed violating this law. Campus smoking shelters are located in the following areas:

The Student Activities Office has general campus information on topics including housing, graduation, vending machine reimbursement, campus bulletin board approval, student government, and campus clubs and organizations.

The Associated Student Government is made up of the Associated Student Council, which meets on Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m., and the Student Activities Council, which meet on Tuesdays at 2:45 p.m. Both meet in the Lair's Upstairs Conference Room. All SCC students are encouraged to attend. Applications for council positions are accepted throughout the year. Elections for president and vice president are held in April. Executive council and programmer positions are appointed in May and senator positions are appointed in October. All positions receive a quarterly stipend.

Free courtesy telephones are available in Buildings 9, 16, and 19 for student use.

Courts are available to students with permission of the PE department. Tennis classes and team practices have priority. During the tennis season, the courts are reserved for team practices each afternoon.

The SCC Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Department conducts a wellness program geared to meet the needs of SCC students. The program focuses on educating, motivating and directing students toward a positive, fitness-oriented, healthful lifestyle. Information is available by appointment for body composition measurement, blood pressure, flexibility and nutrition analysis. Program goals are to reduce the risk of disease and injury and enhance the quality of life for students. Activities offered include both organized classes and open facility usage. The wellness challenge incentive program offered each year is designed to encourage student participation in health, fitness and wellness-related activities and runs from September 1st to August 31st. Points are given for fitness, health, wellness, personal safety, nutrition and environmental activities. Past awards include gloves, T-shirts, socks, water bottles and gym bags. Credit physical education classes offered are: basic fitness, aerobic fitness, kickboxing, weight-training, jogging, swimming, springboard diving, lifeguard training, yoga, basketball, volleyball, tennis, skiing, golf and fast fitness. Lecture classes for stress management and health and wellness are offered. Facilities available for student use during open scheduled hours include locker/shower rooms, swimming pool, indoor/outdoor running tracks, gymnasiums, tennis courts and athletic fields.

Please call for an appointment. Work study is a financial aid award and provides the opportunity for students enrolled in six or more credits to earn money and gain work experience. Students must complete a FAFSA every January for the next academic year. Work Study is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. FAFSA Applications received after April 1 are considered late applicants and may be placed on a wait list. The waitlist usually opens the third Tuesday of fall quarter. You must come to the SCC work study office on that Tuesday (or after) to add yourself to the waitlist. There is no guarantee that students on the work study waitlist will receive work study awards. Work study funding is NEVER guaranteed. Institutional Work Study is based on department needs and funding. Please call the SCC Work Study Office with any further questions or for clarification.

In partnership with WorkSource, the Worker Retraining Program provides job training for dislocated workers, people receiving employment benefits, and those facing imminent layoffs.
