Student Activities

The Arab Culture Club is centered on activities designed to provide students and the college community with better understanding of the Arab culture. This is done through a variety of events focused on family, friends, food, and fun.

Examples of such events are:

1. Opportunities to learn basics of the Arabic language through workshops and other activities
2. Opportunities to learn about Middle Eastern food and cooking
3. Middle Eastern expert speakers, dance workshops (Dabkeh and belly dancing), Middle Eastern nights and festivals, henna art, drum and oud events, game nights, soccer tournaments, etc.

AIAS SCC is the only Spokane chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students and is proud to call Spokane Community College its home. Our chapter will promote excellence in architectural education, training, and practice; foster an appreciation of architecture and related disciplines; enrich our community in a spirit of collaboration; and organize students combining their efforts to advance the art and science of architecture.

Any individuals with interest in architecture or other design-related professions - such as engineering, CAD, construction, landscape and interior design - are welcome to join.

The purpose of the Asian Pacific Islanders is to promote Asian Pacific awareness at Spokane Community College and in the Spokane community through activities and events that feature Asian Pacific cultures, history, and contemporary Asian Pacific issues.

The purpose of the Black Student Union is to promote African American and Black History awareness at Spokane Community College and in the Spokane community through activities and events that feature the culture, history and contemporary Black History issues.

Delta Epsilon Chi is an instruction-related program/club that stresses leadership, management, and marketing. DEC students get opportunities to lead, delegate, share, dream, and succeed. We have many civic conscience projects such as Toys for Needy Children, Halloween Family Fun Night, Easter for Little Brothers and Sisters and various fund-raisers. Competition allows club members to compete with students from other DEC chapters in the State of Washington in such areas as hotel/restaurant, tourism, human resources, decision making, and entrepreneurship. This is a variable credit class in which you may receive one to five credits based on your participation.

The purpose of the SCC Computer Club is to promote and facilitate the use of and education about computers, networks, and software in an informal manner.

The CPR Club promotes leadership, health education, and community service through ongoing activities. The club is currently composed of first- and second-year students in the Invasive Cardiovascular and Respiratory Care programs. During the first year, all students become CPR instructors. Our club has over 50 members, all available for CPR courses on campus and in the community on a volunteer basis. We make a difference not only in CPR skill completion, but also in leading a positive, healthy lifestyle. We hold classes annually for over 500 college students, community members, and medical personnel. The CPR Club sponsors Respiratory Care Week each October and Heart Month activities each February. The club also has the basketball hoop toss each year as part of Halloween family night, holds food drives during finals week and supports professional workshops. We find ourselves getting involved wherever we are needed. Currently, 14 Allied Health instructors and 4 Nursing instructors have successfully completed the requirements to be CPR instructors and join us in providing quality CPR training for our campus.

The Disability Awareness League (DAL) is a student organization dedicated to removing social stereotypes about people with disabilities (physical, learning, psychological, or emotional). The DAL participates in almost every college-sponsored activity and hosts several family fun nights throughout the year. We are also a group striving to create awareness, educate others about "Abilities," and participate in campus and community life. In the past we have co-sponsored a Celebration of Abilities Week to show people you can live a productive life regardless of "dis" Ability. Our meetings and activities are open to all students, faculty, staff, and administration.

The SCC Disc Golf Club is an association of disc golfers formed to represent their collective disc golf interest and Spokane Community College. The club represents students of SCC, as well as family, friends, and interested players within the community.

The Explorers Club is for students currently enrolled in the dental assisting program. Club members initiate and coordinate educational activities to promote dental health both at SCC and in the community. The club promotes team-work while having fun and furthering the dental assisting profession. Members do several fund-raisers every year to support the club's goals, objectives and activities.

The primary focus of the Gamers Guild is to connect game players of all types. If you fancy board games, trading card games, video games, or any other type of games you can think of, then the Gamers Guild is a great place to meet other players like yourself. We put on LAN parties at the end of every quarter and hold tournaments once a quarter as well. So stop on by and join us in our next round of gameplay today!

Ghosts: The Paranormal Society is a club where all your haunts come true! We are interested in studying the paranormal, and we proactively attend ghost hunts. We are a society based upon gaining knowledge of the paranormal, hence we are WAY more epic than "Ghostbusters!" Come and join us in our weekly meetings! We meet Mondays at 1:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Conference Room located in the Lair.

GLOBAL ST:QSA, commonly referred to as Global, stands for Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Action League, Straight and Transgendered: Queer-Straight Alliance. Global's purpose is to promote awareness and provide resources and a safe place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, questioning, ally, transgender, transsexual, asexual, intersex, and non-heteronormative identified people.

The SCC Health Information Management Club is open to all SCC students who are interested in learning more - as well as teaching others - about health informatics and information management issues.

Our goal is to increase awareness of the health information programs that are offered at our college and to the profession in general.

The International Club brings together representatives from various ethnic and racial groups on campus including international, refugee, and immigrant students. The purpose of this organization is to explore bonds of similarity and support each other and the understanding and education of various cultures; to promote international awareness at Spokane Community College and in the Spokane community through activities and events that feature culture, history, and contemporary international issues.

The purpose of the Latin American Student Organization is to promote Latin American awareness at Spokane Community College and in the Spokane community through activities and events that feature Latino culture, history, and contemporary Latino issues.

The purpose of LDSSA (Latter Day Saint Student Association) is to provide students with a balanced secular and spiritual educational experience during their years of formal education at Spokane Community College through religious instruction, social activities, and community service.

As a club, Legends is open to all students who are interested in the literary arts. The club meets to discuss members' works, publication opportunities, and club activities and events. Members are invited to attend workshops concentrating on the art of writing. These conferences are conducted in the area and regionally. Members are also invited to serve as club officers and to attend student activities council, clubs, and organization meetings. Legends' members have been a vital part of SCC's arts efforts. Club members organize and participate in on-campus and off-campus readings. On occasion members go into the community and promote creative writing. Some of the groups Legends has helped to give a voice to though the writing arts are: Spokane County Juvenile Court Services; The School for Design Technology and Visual Art, Technikon Free State, South Africa; and SCC students who are readers of Braille and second language students through translations.

Legends is also involved in the academic course Literary Magazine Production and Advanced Literary Magazine Production (ENG 254 and 255 respectively). This multi-level course culminates in the production of Trade, SCC's literary journal, and provides an excellent opportunity for editors and writers to become involved in the process of building a journal from the ground up. Students learn layout and design, the process of selecting creative work, and the publication process. Legends earned "Honorable Mention" for overall journal production and was awarded the "Best Cover Art and Design" by the Washington Community Technical Colleges Humanities Association Conference's journal competition for 2001 and 2002. The SCC Student Activities Council, the Student Activities staff, and administration selected Legends as "Club of the Year for 2001-2002" and Legends' advisor as "Advisor of the Year for 2002-2003."

The purpose of the Spokane Community College chapter of NALS...the Association for Legal Professionals is to promote networking, further the education and promotion of a high order of professional standards and ethics, and encourage confidence in future legal administrative assistants and paralegals. Membership in NALS provides opportunities to associate with attorneys, judges, and others involved in areas of the law, and to encourage mentoring from among these legal professionals.

The National Society of Leadership and Success is an organization that helps students discover and achieve their goals. The Society offers life-changing lectures from the nation's leading presenters and a community where like-minded, success-oriented individuals come together and help one another succeed. The Society also serves as a powerful force of good in the greater community by encouraging and organizing action to better the world.

The Society is a national honor society that focuses on preparing students to be leaders. We use several services to help students, including a yearlong speaker series, leadership training, and Success Networking Teams. Once students become members, they are members for life and can use an array of resources throughout their lives for job seeking, interviewing, and preparation.

A student is required to attend at least three of the six speaker presentations throughout the year to become a full member. The presentations consist of speakers like Patch Adams, Jack Canfield, and Joe Martin. Topics include leadership, goal setting, and how to transition from college to career. These presentations are available as videoconferences at two different times of day.

Our leadership training is video-based and focuses on exploring the student's challenges, strengths, and passions. It helps each student set up a personal plan to move forward in life.

Our Success Networking Teams are student-directed and are designed to encourage students working together to help each other achieve their personal goals. It is there as a support system throughout the year that gives different perspectives and ideas for solving problems and/or achieving personal goals.

The Native American Student Organization's purpose is to raise awareness of Native American culture, history, and contemporary Indian issues through activities and events and to support the voices of the First Peoples in the Spokane community.

The Natural Resources Association is for all individuals who are interested in natural resources and forest management. The club holds weekly informational meetings with guest speakers from private, county, state, and federal agencies. Participation in professional organizations such as the Society of American Foresters is encouraged.

The Nursing Club is open to all SCC students who are interested in a career in nursing. The club organizes two to three activities per quarter which are generally held in the Health Science Building or the Lair. Officers of the club also meet two to three times per quarter to plan activities and discuss priorities. Examples of activities in which the Nursing Club participates include welcome events for new students, assistance in arrangements for speakers on topics of interest to nurses, assistance with blood drives and blood pressure screenings on campus, and assistance with community events.

The Spokane Community College Outdoor Sports Club aims to connect students, faculty, and staff by encouraging interest and participation in various outdoor recreational activities. The club promotes healthy living, facilitates college networking, and spreads the joys of outdoor sports activities such as hiking, biking, skiing, and snowboarding.

The purposes of Phi Theta Kappa are promotion of scholarship, development of leadership and service, and cultivation of fellowship.

Rho Beta Psi is the SCC chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association. This club allows the SCC Criminal Justice students to: (1) network with other CJ students from colleges and universities around the United States, (2) engage in career related competitions with their peers from other institutions, and (3) attend training relevant to their chosen career field.

Do you enjoy comics - Marvel, DC, independents, or even manga - or an occasional comic book movie? Then come experience SCC's award-winning comic book club! We are a group of fans that get together weekly to discuss the latest and greatest in comics. As a club, we discuss comics and graphic novels, and we attend cons, signings, and an occasional movie premier. Our goal is to fundraise to help the less fortunate in our area. Come join us at our weekly meetings and attend our events. SASQUAD WANTS YOU!!!

The SCC Auto Association is designed for auto technicians, auto machinists, and auto body students. The association sponsors car rallies, performs emissions testing, and holds an annual auto show. The club also competes in drag races and car shows, where it has won numerous awards.

The SCC Culinary Club participates in college events to help raise money for competitions which bring recognition to SCC at western and national events.

SCC Players is open to all individuals who are interested in the theater. The club desires to further the understanding of the interdependence of the theater and the community, to create among its members and the community a sincere interest in theater, and to encourage involvement in all aspects of theatrical production. The SCC Players produce two theatrical productions per year.

The Shut Up and Sign club's main purpose is to bring SCC's deaf and hearing students together in an environment that encourages friendship and understanding of each other's cultures. The club participates in almost every college-sponsored activity and hosts several family fun nights throughout the year. Everyone is welcome to join, even if they do not know sign language. The club supports student advocacy.

Skills USA is one of the largest clubs on campus, and membership is open to anyone enrolled in ten or more credits at SCC. Skills USA is a leadership and skill development club that caters mainly to vocational, industrial, technical, and health science occupation students. Skills USA provides students in these areas with the opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills in their areas of study through one national, and three state competitions such as prepared speech, extemporaneous speech, job skill demonstration, opening and closing ceremonies, job interview, and parliamentary procedure. Leadership in each skill area is represented in over 33 different competitions including automotive technology, heavy equipment repair, electronics, fire science, cosmetology, carpentry, technical drafting, architectural drafting, and precision machining (just to name a few).

Speak Out is Spokane Community College's communication studies club. Our mission on this campus is to meet new people, bring awareness, and offer tools for effectively communicating through guest speakers and small communication conferences.

For public speaking, both verbal and nonverbal communication is extremely important in professional and personal settings. Our goal is to help others learn techniques for success.

SANE is open to all individuals and is committed to raising environmental awareness among the students and faculty of Spokane Community College and among members of the Spokane community in an effort to find solutions to environmental challenges. SANE's efforts are designed to reinforce a healthy interdependence between humans and ecosystems through educational and cultural means.

Annual Earthweek Celebration

SANE helps to organize the annual week long celebration of Earthday on the campus of SCC; including games, lectures, films, etc; all of which help to educate students, faculty and members of the community in an effort to affect postitive change, locally and globally. The Student Awareness League fights ignorance through education. SAL strives to educate SCC students about human rights issues as well as issues dealing with our Earth. This will help our students be well-informed members of our community. As a club, SAL strives to educate and help not only SCC students, but also our community. On SCC's campus, SAL has helped to open the food bank; sought cultural awareness; held information forums for human rights, civil rights, and gay rights; and sponsored Peace & Justice Day and Earth Day. As part of the community, SAL has participated in peace rallies, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, and feeding the poor and homeless. SAL works toward an end to discrimination of any kind. Ignorance causes discrimination, so SAL strives to educate.

The Student Parents Together club at Spokane Community College is designed to give parents an opportunity to enjoy some fun time with their children in the company of fellow students. Family activities are planned throught the school year. The group also affords student parents the opportunity to interact with other parents on campus, to exchange ideas, and to be encouraged in their efforts to juggle family, school, and work commitments.

The Spokane Community College Veterans Club links veterans and their family members from all branches of military service who have served during times of peace and times of war. The Club strives to support veterans, including the veteran's spouse and dependents, by educating them about VA benefits, and local resources available to veterans, including their families, both on and off campus. Such information will assist veterans and their family members to better network and improve their experiences, both as a student at SCC, and also in their transitioned roles in the civilian sector.

We are a chapter of Student Veterans of America.

The Water Resources Association is open to any individual interested in water and environmental issues that affect water quality or water management. The club members' present programs in water related issues, are active with Earth Day activities, environmental programs and activities in the community. Members volunteer with state, local and federal agencies on projects such as clean-up and restoration of sites near streams and lakes, help gather scientific data, and share their knowledge with presentations on campus. The Water Resources Club brings speakers and exhibits to campus, takes exhibits out to area high schools to promote good water management, participates in fund-raising (with other environmental science clubs sponsors two craft fairs a year), and conducts social activities for members and their families.

The X-Ray Vision Club is committed to promoting health education, community service, and professionalism in health care. The club is composed of first- and second-year students who are enrolled in the Radiology Technologist program. It is also open to any interested individual currently enrolled at Community Colleges of Spokane. We strive to make ourselves available to the health care community as needed. It is our goal to make a difference in the community by being active in essential health care issues involving radiology technology.
