Program Description

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program prepares students for mechanical drafting and design using both CAD drafting and Solid Modeling techniques. The course of study prepares students to work in engineering teams for large and small manufacturing firms, consultant engineering firms, testing and research companies. Students with this degree may also transfer to Eastern Washington University’s Mechanical Engineering Technology BA degree program.

Students learn the design and manufacturing processes required for a product to be developed from initial concept to final production. Students not only learn to draft using CAD and Solid Modeling techniques, but also get “hands-on” practical experience in Rapid Prototyping, live design projects, and by learning fabrication processes used in industry. Coursework includes design and assembly techniques as well as shop practice techniques and shop safety. The course of study includes such basic disciplines of engineering technology as math, physics, statics, and materials science.

Program Goals

  1. Understand and apply the basic design principles that relate to the field of mechanical engineering technology.
  2. Provide basic systems design and shop drawings using 2-D CAD and 3-D Solid Modeling.
  3. Identify the materials and processing of materials used in industry.
  4. Skillfully apply computers and engineering office software for documentation and communication.
  5. Work productively in a team environment.
  6. Work with the sense of responsibility and accuracy required in the field of mechanical engineering technology.
  7. Identify and demonstrate skills associated with the manufacture and assembly of machinery and mechanisms.
  8. Create Solid Model computer files to transfer to rapid prototypes, CNC equipment or shop drawings.
  9. Transfer to a bachelor’s degree program in a technology engineering discipline.

Career Opportunities

Employment of technicians remains vital as a result of the increasing complex design problems of modern products and processes. As engineering and scientific occupations continue to grow, more technicians, draftspersons and designers are needed in engineering groups. Due to the expanded use of computer aided design, increased skills are needed in the use of computer drafting equipment and general computer usage.

POTENTIAL POSITIONS INCLUDE: Engineering detailer or draftsperson, engineering design, testing, estimator, manufacturing liaison, manufacturer's representative, technical sales, and research and development technician.
