Program Description
Carpentry is a rewarding career ideally suited to the person who has an interest in and aptitude for working with tools and materials. The trade requires the development of manual skills: skills that involve both thinking and doing. Carpentry also requires a thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in construction work.
The carpenter belongs to the largest group of building trade workers. Job opportunities encompass everything from new residential or commercial construction to remodeling and alteration, maintenance, and building repair work.
First Aid/CPR is a condition of graduation and must be obtained by the third quarter.
Course of Study
Ability to climb and lift heavy objects and work from heights necessary. Physical dexterity essential.
Program Goals
- Be proficient in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools used in the trade.
- Know and identify various types of lumber and building materials including installation techniques.
- Read and understand blueprints including construction methods for residential home building.
- Understand and use appropriate formulas for estimation and cost breakdowns.
- Have knowledge of energy efficient construction systems and materials used to meet current code regulations.
- Develop hands-on experience through participation in on-site projects including construction of the "Touch the Future" house.
- Have knowledge of kitchen layout and design with emphasis on cabinet construction and installation.
- Be able to identify and apply a variety of interior and exterior trim components used in residential construction.
- Understand the importance of building green, including sustainability, recycling, conservation and the significance of an "Energy Star Home" designation.
- Have the knowledge and skills of a second-year apprentice.
Career Opportunities
On a continuing basis the surrounding area has generated far more job opportunities than this program has been able to supply graduates for placement. Graduates seeking employment in the local area can expect a wage ranging from $12 to $16 an hour at the entry level. Potential for higher pay increases with advanced experience and knowledge.
POTENTIAL POSITIONS INCLUDE: home builders' assistant, carpenter apprentice with local union, general contractor, cabinetmaker, framer, lumber yard sales, maintenance carpenter, modular home fabrication, repair and remodeling, specialty contractor (drywall, concrete forms, roofing, siding, interior finish, etc.)
