International students receive academic advising and personal counseling services from both the International Students office and the SCC Counseling Center. These counseling services will help you achieve success in your academic program at SCC and plan your academic future. They will also provide support as you adjust to living in Spokane.

These support services are provided whenever needed, from initial orientation all the way through to your graduation. A close partnership with the advising staff will help you to succeed at Spokane Community College.

Academic Advising

Counselling

Proper academic planning will help you earn your degree faster.

International students at Spokane Community College will meet frequently with academic advisors to discuss their career objectives and academic goals. SCC academic advisors are faculty professionals holding master's degrees in counseling/guidance.

International students who will be entering the regular academic program at SCC are first introduced to the academic advising staff during New Student Orientation. Students who will be studying first at the Spokane College of English Language (the SCC ESL program) will meet with their counselors at the completion of their ESL course.

Students will also meet with advisors periodically through the term to plan course schedules for future terms.

  • Not sure about your major? Visit the advising website for tips and recommendations about selecting your major field of study.
  • Are you planning to earn SCC's Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) and then transfer to a university to complete your bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.)? Visit the Transfer Advising Center to learn how our expert advisors can help.

Personal Counseling

Counselors are available for a wide range of support and assistance - both academic and personal. Counselors can assist in many ways:

  • Helping students to identify their academic and career goals - and choosing the right program to meet those goals
  • Adjusting to life in Spokane can be difficult. Counselors can help with cultural adjustment, homestay difficulties, stress management, test anxiety, relationship difficulties, chemical abuse problems, and more.
  • Major life transitions such as divorce, marriage, death, or grief counseling
  • Academic problems such as time management, goal setting, and decision making

To make an appointment:

International students are also encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator at Spokane Community College to assist with any advising issues - either academic or personal.
