Students may enter the program in summer, fall, or winter quarter depending on space available. Program classes generally run from
7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Contact Admissions at (509) 533-7002 regarding openings. This program offers an
A.A.S. degree, a one-year certificate in carpentry and cabinetry, or a one or two quarter certificate in cabinetry.
Q1 - Fall of first year:
The program provides students with a hands-on approach to competency-based education by simulating high industry standards. New
students are introduced to fundamental terminology and basic math needed for layout and material estimation. Major topics include
transit setup, foundation layout and design, and framing concepts and assembly.
Q2 - Winter of first year:
Second quarter students are introduced to fundamental terminology and basic math needed in the design, layout, and construction of
residential cabinetry. Emphasis is placed on the safe and proper use of both stationary and portable power equipment. Advanced
cabinetry students add to their skill level on more complicated cabinetry projects.
Q3 - Spring of first year:
Third quarter students study local building codes, building permit calculations and basic blueprint reading. Skills acquired in the
first quarter are reinforced with a live, on-site garage project. Students participate in all aspects from foundation to finish work.
Site safety is discussed and practiced.
Q4 - Fall of second year:
Fourth quarter students study advanced blueprint reading and estimation using the actual prints of the house they will construct.
Emphasis is placed on energy and resource-efficient construction methods. Job site safety is discussed and practiced.
Q5 - Winter of second year:
Fifth quarter students continue with their "Touch the Future" house project, including the estimation and installation of doors,
windows, siding, and exterior trim and finish work. Emphasis is placed on energy and resource-efficient construction practices.
Ongoing safety practices are reinforced on the site.
Q6 - Spring of second year:
Sixth quarter students conclude the "Touch the Future" house project. All cabinetry, including the kitchen cabinets, bathroom
vanities, and various other built-ins are designed and constructed by the class. Installation follows, including all interior
trim. Safety practices in the shop and on the job site are reinforced.
Optional summer quarter:
This program offers a one or two quarter certificate in either Basic or Advanced Cabinetry. First quarter students are introduced
to fundamental terminology and basic math needed in the design, layout, and construction of residential cabinetry. Emphasis is
placed on the safe and proper use of both stationary and portable power equipment. Second quarter students advance their skill
level on more complicated cabinetry projects.
