Spokane and the Inland Northwest

Built on the wealth of lumber, mining and the railroads at the turn of the century, Spokane today
is a cultural and commercial hub for eastern Washington, northern Idaho, western Montana, and southern
Alberta and British Columbia.
With a metropolitan population of 418,000, Spokane is the second-largest city in the state of
Washington and serves as a major regional center for health care, banking and transportation.

Residents of Spokane enjoy a true four-season climate. The area's numerous lakes, streams and
mountain ranges offer an almost unlimited number of outdoor recreational choices - both winter and
summer. Spokane also lays claim to two phenomenal community sporting events: Bloomsday, a 7-mile
road race that attracted more than 26,000 runners, joggers and walkers in May 2005, and Hoopfest,
the largest 3-on-3 outdoor basketball tournament in the world, involving well over 6,100 teams,
3,000 volunteers, 140,000 players and fans on any given year.
Culturally, Spokane residents support the Spokane Symphony, plus Interplayers, a professional
theater, and the community-based Spokane Civic Theatre. The 12,000-seat Spokane Arena serves as
both an entertainment and sports venue, hosting big-name stars like Bob Dylan as well as national
athletic events like the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. A revitalized downtown, plus
thriving neighborhood and suburban centers, also offer residents and visitors a wide selection
of dining, shopping and entertainment choices. Don't miss Spokane's wide array of ethnic markets.

hundreds of students for successful transfer to four-year colleges and universities

And then there's our campus - and campus life.
Discover.
SCC is unique! For example, name another college campus where you'll find a
student-managed nursery/floral shop, The Greenery...the full-service restaurant,
Orlando's, which is staffed by students in the college's culinary arts program...a
student-operated commercial bakery...an automotive repair center, also staffed by
students...and a cosmetology center run by SCC students. And for students who are
parents, there's the Bigfoot Child Care Center.
We have excellent instructional facilities as well. A brand-new 65,288-square-foot
Science Building opens to students in 2006, and our state-of-the-art Health Science
Building features a 36,300-square-foot addition, which was completed in 2001. SCC
also is proud of its new Student Services facilities in Building 15, which include
a New Admission Center and recently renovated Multicultural and Disability Support
Services office areas. Stop by and check them out!
Do!
Get involved. Get active. Meet people. Have fun!
SCC offers a wide selection of extracurricular activities, including concerts, campus
special events and multicultural programs. There's something happening almost every day
of the week during the school year.
In addition, you can explore a variety of special interests through our many student clubs.
Two recreational facilities - The Lair-Student Center (TV lounge, video arcade, ping pong and
pool tables, and bowling alley) and Walter S. Johnson Sports Center (Olympic-size swimming pool,
weight room and fitness center, two gyms, indoor and outdoor running tracks, tennis courts and
playing fields) - see lots of action. These facilities support both intramural sports and
Community Colleges of Spokane's intercollegiate sports program for men and women.
One way or the other, we think there's definitely a place for you at SCC.
