College Alliance, November 2011

In Fall Quarter 2008, a new shared governance body called the College Alliance was introduced on campus. Its purpose is to articulate a vision for an improved shared governance model which builds upon the past and better prepares SCC for the future.

The College Alliance's primary roles:

  1. Conduct Strategic Planning
  2. Address college-wide issues
  3. Gather and analyze data germane to issues
  4. Examine alternative courses of action
  5. Present final recommendations for action to the College Cabinet

Membership of the College Alliance is comprised of eight, permanent, highly-committed members:

  1. One Dean, to be elected by the Deans' Council
  2. One member each from the Council of Chairs, Classified Staff Council, and the Enrollment Management/Instructional Council, to be elected by respective council members
  3. Two at-large representatives, serving two-year appointments, appointed by the College President
  4. College Director of Institutional Research and CCS Budget Analyst for the college

The positions on the College Alliance are intended to be constituent-driven, not driven by divisional representation. If you are interested in serving on the College Alliance, you may have the opportunity by serving on one of the representative groups listed above.

In addition, temporary advisors from the Associated Student Council and the Facilities, Technology Advisory, and Equity and Diversity standing committees will be added as needed. In some instances, co-members may be elected to represent particular councils on the Alliance to ensure attendance at Alliance meetings, but co-members will only be entitled to one vote. The Chair of the College Alliance, and/or any other needed positions, will be elected by the group.

The College Alliance's meeting schedule will be determined by its membership. At least one meeting a month will be held jointly with the College Cabinet.

Deliberation of issues that are processed through the College Alliance for decision-making will take into consideration the college's vision and goals, current research and data, available human and fiscal resources, and overall impact to the institution.

The College Alliance will deal with college-wide issues, whereas day-to-day operations will be handled through the college's existing administrative structure.
