Health services are rapidly expanding to keep pace with the growing population, and opportunities for medical office specialists are expected to increase. Physicians in private practice and in all kinds of health organizations will need qualified medical office specialists. This two-year associate in applied science degree program will prepare students for careers in medical offices, hospitals, or insurance companies.

Courses emphasize medical terminology, medical coding, medical office computing, computerized and manual billing, claims processing, transcription, reception and computerized patient scheduling. Emphasis is also placed on grammar, business math, accounting, and job preparation techniques. Graduates will have training in general office skills, along with the required background in medical insurance billing and coding procedures.

During their last quarter, students complete two 66-hour internships in medical offices-one emphasizing coding, billing, and assisting tasks and the other stressing front office reception and scheduling. Faculty will assist students in finding internship sites.
