Medical Office Specialist
A.A.S. Degree, 98 credits, 6 quarters
Health services are rapidly expanding to keep pace with the growing population, and opportunities for medical office specialists are
expected to increase. Physicians in private practice and in all kinds of health organizations will need qualified medical office
specialists. This two-year associate in applied science degree program will prepare students for careers in medical offices, hospitals,
or insurance companies.
Courses emphasize medical terminology, medical coding, medical office computing, computerized and manual billing, claims processing,
transcription, reception and computerized patient scheduling. Emphasis is also placed on grammar, business math, accounting, and job
preparation techniques. Graduates will have training in general office skills, along with the required background in medical insurance
billing and coding procedures.
During their last quarter, students complete two 66-hour internships in medical offices-one emphasizing coding, billing, and assisting
tasks and the other stressing front office reception and scheduling. Faculty will assist students in finding internship sites.
Students who successfully complete this program are prepared to:
- an exposure to all of the duties necessary to be employed in a medical office/clinic;
- knowledge of general anatomy and medical terminology;
- knowledge and skills in transcription of medical correspondence and reports;

knowledge and skills to perform the duties of a medical office specialist, including medical records coding, insurance billing,
reception, appointment scheduling, and bookkeeping; and
- CPR and first aid certification.
