You may earn college credits toward a certificate or degree through the successful completion of online classes. The Administrative
Office Systems Department has extensive online class offerings; 86 credits of the required 111 credits for the administrative assistant
degree are currently available online, an additional 13 credits will be offered online for the first time during 2003-2004, and substitutions
for 7 credits are available to online students. Many of the tests for the courses are proctored; local colleges and libraries are often
willing to proctor exams.
Program Description
Our administrative assistant program combines a well-balanced academic grounding with expert administrative assistant instruction, giving
graduates the diversified training and background needed to hold positions of responsibility and importance in many areas of the business
world. It helps raise the office skills of the student to a professional level, gives the student a technical background through completion
of technical skills courses, and provides an academic background as well. Overall, it provides the student a mature understanding of professional
responsibilities and minimizes the need for additional on-the-job training.
Students who successfully complete this program are prepared to:

use Microsoft Office XP (Word at the expert level and PowerPoint, Access, Excel, and Outlook at the core level - see
Microsoft Office Specialist certification requirements);

file electronically and handle a variety of internal and external business forms and understand their purpose;

operate a variety of business machines, including computers, electronic typewriters, digital copiers, transcribers, facsimiles, printers,
telephones and calculating machines;

use the Internet to obtain information and conduct e-commerce;

exhibit management initiative and dependability, follow directions, and have pride in high-quality work;
- understand the scope of business operations and economic systems;
- take notes and transcribe them into proper form;

understand the systems and procedures of organizing and planning office work, controlling employees' performance, and exercising leadership
skills that make the modern employer-employee relationship a pleasant, rewarding, and successful experience; and
