English and Foreign Languages

      Welcome, Prospective Students!

We have created this site so that you can get to know a little bit about us before you enter our classrooms. The teachers, friends, and students in these pages offer words of wisdom, encouragement, and other tidbits to make your stay at Spokane Community College just a little more inviting.

Feel free to contact any of the people represented in this site if you have questions or concerns. If you spend some time visiting with us, you will have more information for planning successful English or foreign language studies at Spokane Community College.

The site also contains some events and terms particular to the English and Foreign Languages Department. By doing this, we hope to give others a chance to understand some of our practices.

Student Learning Outcomes

Spokane Community College's English and Foreign Languages faculty actively use SCC's Student Learning Outcomes Abilities for Assessment. Here are the four abilities that most English instructors will incorporate into their respective course curricula:

Responsibility: Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize, understand, and accept ownership for learning by self-assessing, demonstrating, and evaluating behaviors that support the learning situation.
Written Communication: Students will demonstrate the ability to create meaning between themselves and their audience; learn to listen, speak, and write effectively using words, graphics, electronic media, computers, and quantified data.
Global Awareness: Students will demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the world: its scientific complexity, its social diversity, and its artistic variety.
Problem Solving: Students will demonstrate the ability to access, evaluate, and apply information from a variety of sources and in a variety of contexts.
